Although Franklin wasn't a lawyer, he told his son that he learned the hard way when as a young man he received a "drunk driving" arrest, represented himself in the local court, paid four thousand dollars in fines and penalties, and served one month in the local jail. As he mentioned to his son, after he got out of jail, he found out from an attorney friend that if he would have hired a "driving under the influence" lawyer to represent him in court, he probably would have had his fines and penalties significantly reduced and he may have never served any time in the city jail.
When Lawrence heard this he knew he needed more DUI facts and so he asked his father for more information about what a "drunk driving" lawyer can do in a "drunk driving" arrest. His father then articulated the following: "If you have prior DUI convictions, hiring a DUI lawyer to represent you is strongly recommended. Why? Because DUI lawyers know how to get prior convictions removed from your record, thereby possibly reducing your penalties to a great extent should you be convicted."
When Lawrence listened to his dad explain this, it was as if his eyes were opened for the first time about the critical nature of hiring a "drunk driving" lawyer. Near the end of their conversation, Lawrence said that he was starting to grasp the significance of DUI laws and what "drunk driving" attorneys" can do for a person who has received a "driving under the influence" arrest.
After getting "schooled" about "driving under the influence" arrests, the role of DWI attorneys, and the fact that he didn't have to agree to take any field sobriety tests at the time of his arrest, Lawrence decided that he would without question hire a "driving under the influence" lawyer to represent him in the local court. Something else, however, took place after he had talked to his dad. Lawrence finally began to comprehend the critical nature of "drunk driving" arrests and, as a result, he came to a decision that from this point forward, he would always drink responsibly so that he would never again have to go through another "driving under the influence" arrest.
His dad smiled at Lawrence and mentioned the following: "Lawrence,it took me until I was thirty-five years old to realize what you just told me. I am really proud of you." This did wonders for his self worth and so Lawrence thanked his father and then said, "if I can always drink responsibly, I will never need to hire a DWI attorney again!"
There was, however, one thing that neither Lawrence nor his dad thought about, namely, if Lawrence is exhibiting any alcohol abuse signs or maybe if he is displaying any of the common signs of alcoholism. If truth be known, if Lawrence is displaying any alcohol signs that indicate alcohol dependency or alcohol abuse, he may need alcohol counseling.
In all honesty, Lawrence may be mandated by the court to get rehabilitation for his unhealthy and excessive drinking. The good news, conversely, is that whatever it takes to deal with his abusive and careless drinking, it appears that Lawrence will be highly motivated to do the "right" thing.
