Treats are a common way to teach your dog obedience; you can reward him with a treat when he does something you want him to do, or if he ignores your orders you don't give him a treat. Don't shout at your dog as he will only become scared of you and you don't want that, you want to encourage an everlasting relationship with him. Make friends with a dog and you will have a friend for ever.
When doing your basic dog training try and carry out the lessons away from any outside influences like birds or cats that he might chase. Take him to an empty field or park where there aren't any other people or animals. Teaching the sit command is fairly easy, tell your dog to sit, then place your hand over his hind quarters and gently push him down into a sitting position, when he is in the sitting position tell him he's a good boy, then reward him with a treat.
By regularly repeating this exercise, your dog will sit when he is told, because he knows that by obeying you he will be rewarded and also because he can see that you are delighted with his efforts. Ultimately your dog will naturally do what you tell him, and there will be no need to give him a reward.
